Marta’s WA Travel blog.
Today “New Norcia” Reason for the destination was, I read about “Monks” making bread, so being 1hr 16min from Aveley I thought bugger it let’s go. Although I got some great pics; maybe even better pics if I did the tour, but I couldn’t justify paying the advertising price for basically a ghost town! $12.50 per adult for basic tour.
New Norcia est 1853 was WA’s only monastery town for Monks: not only is there no more monks, all the historic buildings have been turned into hotels, disappointing was my perception on such history of the town. But the church bell did still ring.
Unless you book the tour everything is locked and the only buildings worth looking at was the St Gertrude’s girls school and st ildephonsus boys school, I can only assume is kept in original historic conditions and not a hotel like the two Monk Monastery.
The town was known for the bakery by the monks but that’s not open to the public.
So if the town wants to gain more tourism it needs to lift its game. I enjoyed purely photographing the buildings other than that it’s not somewhere I would return.
Great for history lovers.
